The Battle of Palmito Ranch was fought on May 12-13 1865. It was a Confederate victory.

This was not the end of Confederate military activity though. The CSS Shenandoah was in the Pacific. Her captain learned from newpapers found aboard a US ship captured June 27, 1865 of Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The Shenandoah continued to take prizes until August 2, when the captain learned from a British man-of-war that all hostilities in the American Civil War were ended. Her captain then sailed her from the north Pacific, around Africa, to Liverpool, England, arriving November 6, 1865. The crew tied her up alongside a pier and walked off, being the last to haul down the flag.
