The German government? Yes. The governments of the various countries allied with or occupied by Germany? Yes. The governments of countries, like the U.S., that were at war with Germany? No.Michael Montagne

AnswerThe Holocaust was carried out on the orders of the German government. This is something that modern Germany officially acknowledges. In other words, the holocaust was NOT some unofficial or 'private' initiative, and it wasn't a matter of 'excesses' by units running amok. The holocaust was official policy of the Third Reich. The governments of Nazi-occupied countries and of most of Germany's WW2 allies were also heavily involved.

News about Chelmno (Kulmhof) reached the Foreign Office late in December 1941 from the Polish Underground. The document has the comment 'Bolshevik Propaganda?' written in the margin by a middle ranking British official ...! By the middle of 1942 the British government was fairly well informed and the media had shortened reports.

They knew that Jews were being rounded up and deported to death camps but there was nothing they could really do to stop it. The camps were all deep in side German held territory mainly in eastern Europe. The full scale of the Horror was not know by the Allies until camps were liberated by the Russans, British and Americans in 1945.
