The Soviet Union, as with many countries, had many aspects of its history that could be considered good and bad. On the plus side, Soviet Communism was the product of the crumbling Russian Monarchy which was incapable of supporting both its people and defending itself from the Imperial German army. The takeover of the Bolsheviks was a massive positive change in Russia, as literacy, education, technology, infrastructure, sciences and the creation of a modern, well-equipped military rose from it. On the other hand however the Soviet Union was brutal and unforgiving with its citizens. The harsh governing system prompted many people to leave Soviet territories, and many others were executed or died in labor camps. The Soviet Union also annexed many territories and establish puppet states within them to maintain control, oftentimes against the will of the people it presided over.
In short, the Soviet Union was both good and bad.

May I note the Soviet Union's three most major problems...
1st Being Stalin's gain to power, the Soviet Union was created for good, it was to destroy the corrupt of the world, and promote the peasants so unity could be reached but some how Stalin unjustly took the position of leader of the Soviet Union, he killed 1/3rd of his population just to gain foreign support for agriculture, etc. And he made sure all opposers of his version of communism were to "disappear." This version would later be known as Stalinism. Its what North Korea uses; so yeah. It's not good.
2nd The Soviet Union funded foreign worker's parties like N. Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc. This caused conflict, which may i mind you the U.S. made worse by participating in these proxy wars which just ended up in destruction and death on both sides.
3rd The Censorship the Soviet State put on its people really made them feel detached from the world, no one was allowed in, and no one out. That came from Stalinist Communism. So in total it really wasn't communist like the Soviet Union's found Vladimir L. Lenin had in mind. It's like the U.S. for example. It was made with good cause; for freedom, liberty, love, etc. But slowly corrupted and started participating in wars they didn't need to participate in. And now the U.S. Economy is undermined, very similar to the Soviets in the late 80's.
Theres just a little more facts to back up how the Soviet Union was made for good but ended up just hurting the people socially and economically with the world.
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was neither in the right nor the wrong. The United States and her allies constantly fought with the Soviets and their allies in indirect confrontations all over the globe. The Soviets tried to convince other nations to create socialist regimes, often leading to violence and civil wars within them. The United States acted to contain the spread of Communism, going so far as to topple democratically-elected communist leaders. The Soviets were demonized during this time period as the greatest evil in the world. Though this was merely Propaganda, the effects linger to this day. Most people would claim that the Soviet Union was without a doubt the bad guy of the Cold War, yet a look at history or talking with a historian would bring you to the conclusion that there were no true "good guys" of the era.
The Soviet union were Bad thier leader was Joseph Stalin, a ally of Adolf Hitler in the second world war. Stalin also didn't let anyone enter or exit the country. It was mainly created for good but then slowly it turned bad.
