Until John Rolfe arrived with tobacco seeds it was pretty much a failure. It was began as a investment for the London Company. The 104 men who first came weren't there to settle, but to seek gold and go home. They built the fort on the worse land in the area. The water was bad, there were disease carrying mosquitoes., and they were in an empire of 15,000 Native Americans.

the James town colony was not success full. they built it by a swamp with diseased mosquitos and their river water was salty. they didn't ever move though.
