In 1636 the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony voted to form "New Colledge," also known as "the college at New Towne." In 1639 it was renamed "Harvard Colledge" in tribute to John Harvard, a clergyman who willed 400 books to the school upon his death. The university was expected to prepare young men for the ministry.
