We can't be sure either way. Pitt was a very guarded and private man who revealed himself only to a small circle of close friends. He was a lifelong bachelor and there have been rumours about affairs with his protege George Canning and/or with Tom Steele but nothing has been confirmed one way or the other. Historians tend to be cautious but do not rule out the possibility that he may have been gay. The gay community often cites Pitt as a homosexual due to his close friendships with men and the account of Pitt's niece, who was his housekeeper. However, William Hague's biography of Pitt suggests that there is no record of sexual liasons with men or women and that Pitt the Younger may have been Britain's only virgin Prime Minister.
