He lead a rebellion that resulted in many deaths of black and white Americans, but that doesn't necessarily equate insanity either; it can equate someone who truly wanted out of the situation he was born into, and could be seen as desperation on his part.

Though some might say he was, one might also have to say, his madness was not of his own doing but merely a result of his environment and forced lifestyle.

Turner did firmly believe that he was called upon God to led the revolt. Today many people, psychiatrists included, would think that a person who claims to talk to God is insane.
