There he devoted himself to philosophy and rhetoric. He spent the last 40 years of his life (23 BC to 17 AD ) devoted to writing the history of Rome. He planned a voluminous history of Rome which he completed in 142 books. To date only 35 of these books have been preserved. During his time in Rome he became a friend of Augustus Caesar.
