Germany attacked & occupied Denmark beginning 4:15am on April 9, 1940. This was done as part of the German invasion of Norway. Germany needed air bases in Denmark to support its simultaneous invasion of Norway.
Denmark was not a strategic target in itself, but merely a stepping stone in the invasion of Norway. Controlling the Norwegian coast line was an important part of Germany's attempt to cut off Britain from overseas supplies.
