The Masonic memberships of the American founding fathers, such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, have been thoroughly researched, and a number of books on the subject written. The Masons usually keep scrupulous records not only of when and where a man became a mason, but even when he visited a lodge throughout his life. It is a great point of pride for a lodge to say "Paul Revere signed our visitor's register in 1783." Since no written record of Charles Thomson's membership has appeared by now, he probably was not a mason.
