Sudan is a presidential republic, whose president of 22 years is Omar al-Bashir. Since the end of its civil war, Sudan has been operating with a government of national unity, in which citizens from the Muslim North and Christian South occupy government positions proportional to their populations. The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, is also the vice president of Sudan as a whole.
In January, 2011, South Sudan voted to secede from Sudan, and will become the world's newest independent country in July. From that point forward, both Sudans will presumably be presidential republics.
Another significant feature of Sudanese government is that it derives the majority of its criminal, social and economic law from Shari'a, or law derived from Islamic scripture. This has led to controversy when Islamic punishments have been accidentally applied to non-Muslims, who are universally agreed to be exempt from such punishments. Southern Sudanese laws are not derived from Islam.
Egypt is officially a REPUBLIC, but it functions much more as if it were a military junta.
