The 53 bicycles in the question refer to the "Bicycle" brand of playing cards, and the "field of green" refers to a table at a casino (usually explained by the riddle-teller as a Poker table, but can be any gaming table). Everybody knows that there are only 52 cards in a deck, so somebody must have cheated for there to be 53. "Somebody dies" can be taken literally, or in the context of having to leave the casino.
