There were some striking similarities to those two wars. In both cases a country was divided in half, and the northern half became a communist state while the southern half was non-communist, and the communist north in both cases invaded the non-communist south, and the US sent in its military to protect the south from being conquered by the north. In both cases the communist northern nations bordered on China and received their main support from China. The main difference is that in the case of the Korean War, the defense succeeded, and South Korea remains an independent nation to this day, whereas in the case of the Vietnamese War the defense failed, and Vietnam is today a single communist nation.

Both were proxy wars in which the United States, the Soviet Union, and China became involved.
