The first flag of the United States of America had "13 stars, white on a field of blue representing a new constellation." The 13 stars actually represented the first 13 states of our new nation in 1776. But, our first flag did not show up until June 14th 1777 when the Continental Congress specified the flag to be used on our ships of war during the Revolutionary War (the War of Independence) against Great Britain.
