At first, this question seems kind of silly. Anyone can claim they have a new religion I guess. But the US Government does have criteria for recognizing a tax-exempt religion. So it is a serious question. Some organizations have to show that they are a legitimate church, even though they are claiming affiliation to an existing religion. This was a issue when a group of Native American Indians wanted to smoke a natural plant as part of their religion but the Government wanted to outlaw it. I think it is wrong to outlaw one practise or act just because a religion says it is part of their tradition. If that is the case, then soon we will have immigrants from India wanting to smoke cocaine to get their spiritual high as they do in India.
