At first, this question seems kind of silly. Anyone can claim they have a new religion I guess. But the US Government does have criteria for recognizing a tax-exempt religion. So it is a serious question. Some organizations have to show that they are a legitimate church, even though they are claiming affiliation to an existing religion. This was a issue when a group of Native American Indians wanted to smoke a natural plant as part of their religion but the Government wanted to outlaw it. I think it is wrong to outlaw one practise or act just because a religion says it is part of their tradition. If that is the case, then soon we will have immigrants from India wanting to smoke cocaine to get their spiritual high as they do in India.
Because many people make the mistake of thinking mythology and religion are the same. Read this question for more info: Is_Greek_mythology_an_ancient_religionAnd for more info on modern Hellenismos (Hellenic polytheistic reconstructionism): Discuss:Is_ancient_Greek_religion_dead

Religion is what people turn to when they dont know what else to do. This is the case in many places all over the world and in America. People turn to religion to seek guidance, aid, and they seek what they can do at a time when they are down, when they have no where else to turn.

That's an opinion question and many will say their own, but in the strict sense of the word they all are religions. "True" could be taken in many contexts, but by the very nature of religion, none can be proven to be "true"which is what makes them a religion. Faith is required.
It is not required to follow your religion. It is a preference. Many people believe they are being judged by a higher power, therefore they worship their God. It isn't a question of whether or not you have to but it is whether or not you wantto.
Since religious freedom is a basic right in the constitution no one is required to report what religion they follow or beliefs. World wide about 1% practice it.
Mainly because they believe their corresponding religion is true.
It is called Searching For Meaning. Many people seek a sense of meaning to life. Religion can help some of them find meaning. Many people will "try out" different religions until they find the one which best satisfies them. There is nothing wrong with this at all. Any religion at all has been shown to make people feel happier and be more healthy mentally than having no religion.
