Ellis island immigrants were deported if they had a disease that was incurable, or sometimes if they failed the Island process.

Added: All immigrants had to pass certain medical health, physical, mental, and psychological exams AND have a firm destination in the US to which they were headed to be housed by a friend or family member or employer. If anyone failed the exams or did not have a destination to whch to go, they were returned to their country of origin - EVEN if it meant breaking up a family unit.
