I am not certain but I think that total U.S, military strength reached eight million. The total number who seved would have been somewhat larger than that but not greatly since most men served for the duration. Michael Montagne

Very few, if any, of the average foot soldiers did. There were some airmen and some high ranking officers who were in both. One who comes to mind is General Alexander "Sandy" Patch, who commanded the end of the Guadalcanal campaign, after the Marines were withdrawn and it was left to the army to finish up. Patch later commanded the 7th Army in France, Germany and Austria. Another was General Charles H. "Pete" Corlett, who had fought in the Aleutians and commanded the 7th Infantry Division in the assault on Kwajalien Island. Corlett was sent by General Marshall to England to assist in the planning of the D-Day Normandy invasion. Marshall thought the planners would find Corlett's experience useful, but they ignored him and his advice. Corlett went on to be one of the better corps commanders in France and Germany. One airman who was in both theaters was Paul Tibbetts, who flew the first atomic mission to Hiroshima. He had led the very first bomber raid of the 8th Air Force from England, and flown a complete tour. Pilots had to complete a certain number of missions to finish a "tour" and be rotated back home. A number then went on to do another tour in the Pacific.
Ground troops though, once sent to either the Atlantic or Pacific, stayed there. There was no getting out of your unit unless you were shot up so badly you could not fight anymore.
There were several divisions which fought in Italy, and which made the second D-Day attack on the Riviera, the Mediterranean coast of southern France - these included the 3rd Infantry Division (which had also fought in North Africa) the 36th Infantry Division, and the 45th Infantry Division. The 1st and 9th Infantry Divisions fought in Africa and Sicily before being sent to England to provide experienced units for the Normandy landings. The 82nd Airborne Division also fought in Sicily and Italy before going to England to participate in the Normandy landings.
All Marines fought in the Pacific. There were no Marine units in Europe. Every large ship has a Marine detachment, so there were Marines offshore at Normandy and two months later in southern France, but none ashore.
There were ships and sailors which saw service in both oceans.
