Dozens of groups travelled the Mormon trail over a period of about 20 years. The length of time it took to travel the trail depended on the starting point, mode of travel, weather conditions, and who was in the party. A group of a few men on horseback or in a small wagon could make it in a matter of a couple weeks. Groups like this consisting of misisonaries assigned to the east coast or Europe were a common sight along the trail. A large group of families traveling in a wagon train would take a few months, and a large group traveling by handcart would take several months. Some started from Illinois, some from St. Louis Missouri, and others from other states in the east, where they had arrived from Europe.
Mormons travelled the Mormon trail to Utah in wagon trains from 1845 to 1869. In 1869 the transcontinental railroad was completed and many Mormons going to Utah began taking the train.
The Mormon Trail was approximately 1,300 miles long from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah.
They bought the land and started to make it habitable in 1839. The city itself was founded in 1840. They were driven out around 1846, so either 6 or 7 years, depending on how you are counting.
How long did it take Juan ponce DE Leon to complete his journey?

There were very few established cities along the trail west at the time the first Mormons traveled it in 1846/47. Most of what they would have found were trading posts, not cities. (I don't really know that it counts as "finding" when the cities and trading posts they passed through were well known) In fact, when they reached their final destination in the Salt Lake Valley, there was no permanent settlement for several hundred miles in any direction. If you are asking what cities the Mormons founded in the west, the list is much to long to include here. They first founded Nauvoo, Illinois but were forced to leave. Following their arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, the first city they founded was Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City became the central hub and major city in that area of the west. Mormons went on to be the founders of nearly every city in Utah, as well as many in Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, California, Nevada, Canada, and Mexico.

Salt Lake City used to be called Great Salt Lake City. The "Great" was taken out because the name is just plain too long.
