Manifest destiny called for a continental United States. This of course, put the US at odds against Mexico, which already possessed the present-day US states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, as well as parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas. After the Texas Revolution (1836-1838) in which Texas split up from Mexico, American presidents John Tyler (term 1841-1845) and James K. Polk (term 1845-1849) wished to add the Pacific coast and California to the US, and sought to acquire it by any means necessary. The annexation of Texas as a state in 1846 led almost immediately to border conflicts that escalated into war.
The Mexican Cession and the annexation of Texas achieved Manifest Destiny for the US.
