The Native Americans were not expecting the Spaniards. When the Spaniards arrived, the Native Americans initially mistook them for Gods. The horse had not been introduced outside of Europe yet and many Native Americans confused what they were seeing as half man and half horse. The natives were hospitable until it became apparent what the Spaniard's hidden agenda was.
