The Americans won several battles in the Mexican-American War because of:

1 - better discipline and drilling of rank and files;

2 - high professionalism, educational level and spirit of enterprise of the officers;

3 - better strategies developed by their field commanders;

4 - superior quality of weapons and munitions employed;

5 - better criterion of the use of troops and fire on the field, especially artillery, which always managed to overwhelm that of the opponents.

In other words, the American, smaller, well equipped, professional Army, entirely made up of volunteers, defeated the larger, poorly equipped and badly led Mexican Army largely made up by illiterate or poorly educated conscripts.
