The Rabies vaccine was invented in 1885, prior to that, all one could do is hope that he didn't catch the virus if bitten by an animal. They would have used morphine, if available, but typically, someone would simply be tied down and nature would take it's course. There is still no realistic treatment if someone contracts the symptoms, it's already too late. That's why it's so important to get the vaccine.

The people back in the 1800s were not that experienced in animal's diseases. I highly doubt that there was a cure back then. The vaccine was developed in 1885, which was long after the Oregon Trail had happened.

They used to cut off the infected area using just a simple saw. there were no Anesthetics in those days so the victim had some alcohol and a rope to bite on.

well they would cut the part that was bitten off and wrap it tightly in cloth
