Poland did not declare independence in 1989; Poland was already an independent country and had been since 1944. In 1989, Poland's Communist Leadership met with the opposition in Solidarnosc (Solidarity) and discussed constitutional reform. The resulting constitutional reform abolished the Polish People's Republic (a Communist Country) and established the Republic of Poland (a Democratic Republic).The reason that the people wanted this change was that it would give them more political rights (especially in terms of accountability for failed policies) and, ostensibly, improve Poland's economic situation.
