The African Americans role in the siege of Peters burg, Virginia during the Battle of Crater and in the Battle of Nashville were of vital importance. Their relief roles were serving as cooks, nurses, blacksmiths, etc. They were also used as spies and agents. It is said that about one-third African Americans lost their lives.

Slaves who had been freed by the Union armies on their Southern campaigns did not know what to do, and the armies didn't know what to do with them either.

At first they regarded them as a nuisance, needing food and accommodation, and generally getting in the way.

Then they put them to work, carrying out heavy, awkward tasks that would otherwise have to be done by white soldiers, and began to see them as having some viable function, however lowly.

Watching these gangs of strong men performing army fatigues in cast-off army uniforms, it began to occur to the troops that these blacks could actually fill up the junior ranks of fighting units, giving the existing rank-&-file a chance of speedy promotion.

Presently it became normal for blacks to enlist in the army in the normal way, and by the end of the war, there were whole black brigades, some of them battle-hardened and higly dependable.
