The word holiday comes from 'holy days'. On days allotted for religious festivals, they ceased work and engaged in the festival to th gods, and ate well if they could afford it. The other days they worked producing food or at a trade. There were none of the 'day's off' which exist today - life was a struggle for survival and hopefully a degree of prosperity.
