Austria, however it was not really an invasion but a coerced decision by the Austrian government to turn power over to the Austrian Nazi Party (that took orders from Hitler). It was called the "Anschluss" which is German for 'joining', 'connection', or 'union'. Thereafter Austria was considered part of "greater Germany" and fully participated in Germany's ambitions & conquests.

Nazi Germany's first invasion was Austria.

Throughout the 1930s, Austria was ruled by a Fascist government closely linked with Mussolini's Italy. With Italy's support, Austria was able to resist Nazi efforts to cause Germany and Austria to unite. However, by spring 1938, Italy and Germany had become friends, and Mussolini ended his support for Austria's independence.

In March 1938, Nazis had become so powerful in Austria that the Austrian dictator, Kurt Schuschnigg, was compelled to hold a vote, to see if the Austrian people would support joining with Germany. However, Schuschnigg intentionally made it difficult for the Nazi supporters to win the vote. Austrian Nazis and their supporters were enraged.

When Austrian Nazis complained to Hitler about this, Hitler ordered Schuschnigg not to hold the vote, or Germany would invade. The day before the vote, Germany's military invaded. The Austrian government ordered their military not to resist, so the Germans faced no opposition, and frequently were met by crowds of enthusiastic Nazi supporters. Anti-Nazi politicians in Austria were arrested, some of whom (including Schuschnigg) were later sent to concentration camps. Any possible resistance to the Nazi takeover was suppressed.

About a month after the invasion, Hitler held his own vote in Austria. Like Schuschnigg, he intentionally rigged the vote so that his side would win- and it did, with over 99% of the vote in favor. Austria had officially been annexed by Nazi Germany, and would remain a part of Germany until 1945.
