The U.S, and Spain never did own the Philippines. They seemingly made it understood to be by treaties and the Law of Kragg (Law of the Jungle) forceful acquiescence. The U.S. supposedly having bought the Philippines from Spain in the Treaty of Paris of December 10, 1898 signed by both Spain and the U.S. only while the strings of Sultanate governments since the 1400s were not a contracting party in the said treaty. A year after in August 20, 1899. the U.S. signed Bates treaty with the Sultanate government permitting U.S. interests in the Sulus in exchange of respecting the Muslim Islamic customs and traditions along with their visiting rights. So, how could the U.S. ever had owned the Muslim National Archipelago or so-called Philippines. Upon this realization, the U.S. unilaterally abrogated or voided the Bates Treaty without the knowledge of the Sultanate government, so to hide their mistake. No! neither did the Philippine Republic until the self-identified government in manila, thru illegal means with the Americans' assistance, legalized the ownership to the Philippine government on July 4, 1946 Philippine Independence. Later in 1963, Philippine President Diosdado macapagal thru RA-4166 changed the Philippine Independence to June 12, 1898 Declaration of Independence by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo against the Americans while the manila "government" were alongside the American fighting Gen. Aguinaldo. so also to hide far from the truth so to give credit to the manila government of having deservingly worked for its independence. Although one mistake, because Gen. Aguinaldo's preliminary statement on his declaring the proclamation of Independence, he cited the independence for only Luzon and Visayas and with the exception of Mindanao and Sulu as of the latter two were independent sovereignty States.

The US control on the Philippines was indirect. When the US colonized Philippines they send some of their men or appoint a presidency in the Philippines to took control. This happened during the Common Wealth,
The Philippines is related to the US in that from 1899 until 1946 The Philippines was a territory of the US. In 1946 the Philippines became a fully independent nation, but the US maintained military bases there for several more decades. One result of this is that English is one of the official languages of the Philippines, and there are many Filipinos who are veterans of US military service.
