A veteran is anyone who has served in the military. As far as veteran benefits are concerned, only those who have served at least six months on active duty are eligible for benefits.

An exception would be a reservist who was injured during training.

If you are a former reserve or National Guard member, stand proud as a veteran who volunteered to put your life on the line for liberty.

The "American Legion" was created by WWI veterans in about 1919. The "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (VFW) was created by Spanish-American Veterans of 1898, and is our oldest Veterans group. The "American Veterans" (AMVETS) was created by WWII veterans. Originally, these veteran groups were open to only their own veterans, but as time went by they opened to all "qualified" veterans.

Are marine reservists considered Veterans?

Normally no, but it really depends. For benefit purposes, those who enter into service as a reservist and have less than 90 days of active duty time are typically known as current members of the Armed Forces and do not normally qualify for veteran benefits. Those that have completed an active duty contract and then transfer into the reserves at the expiration or termination of his or her active portion of the contract are normally known as veterans. In an informal setting, the word veteran can apply to any that have previously or are now serving in the military.
