There are quite few actually:

  • Short check out periods (for most libraries, this is 14 days) and that can be short if you are a slow reader or you have too many items checked out.
  • Most libraries have a cap on how many times you can renew a book (the cap may vary between libraries).
  • When someone else reserves a book that you have checked out, that means you cannot renew it.
  • Some libraries have a limitation on the amount of books you can have at one time (especially best sellers, dvds, and Video Games).
  • Libraries do not have a wide selection of everything as they have a budget to adhere to.
  • You have to waste gas to get and return books. This can be particularly troublesome if you don't live near a library.
  • Books can be defaced or so worn out that it can interfere with reading.
  • Long wait list. This is especially true for popular books.
  • You can't personalize the book. Some people like to write notes in the margins of their book as a way of immersing themselves in their readings.
  • Accumulated fines can defeat the point of checking out books.
  • If you use library computers, you will more than likely be limited to how much time you can be on them.
  • Libraries may have limited hours on Fridays, Saturday, and Sunday which ironically is the best time for most people to go to the library.
  • Libraries are often victims of censorship. Some people disagree with content of books and will create controversies in order to get them banned. Because libraries are tax supported, their hands get tied, often with no choice but to give in to the controversy.

Libraries can still be a great source to use and there are benefits. But there are also downsides that people should take into consideration. In the end, only you know what works best and whether or not pros out way the cons or vice versa.
