The February Revolution took Lenin, who was in Switzerland at the time, and the Bolsheviks completely by surprise. The Czar's ministers and military leaders realized the Czar no longer had any power to stop the demonstrations and strikes in Petrograd and convinced him to abdicate in March 1917.

Czar Nicholas II was first taken by the forces of the Russian Provisional Government after he was forced to abdicate his throne. Later after the Bolshevik Revolution, he was taken into Bolshevik custody. In July 1918, the Czar and all his family were murdered by the Bolsheviks.

It should be remembered that the Bolsheviks never overthrew the Czar. He was already out of power by the time the Bolsheviks took over.
