Serum TBG level is a blood test to measure the level of a protein that moves thyroid hormone throughout your body. The protein is called thyroxine binding globulin (TBG).
Alternative NamesSerum thyroxine binding globulin; TBG level
How the test is performedBlood is drawn from a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand. The site is cleaned with germ-killing medicine (antiseptic). The health care provider wraps an elastic band around the upper arm to apply pressure to the area and make the vein swell with blood.
Next, the health care provider gently inserts a needle into the vein. The blood collects into an airtight vial or tube attached to the needle. The elastic band is removed from your arm.
Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed, and the puncture site is covered to stop any bleeding.
The sample is then taken to the laboratory where it is examined using special tests such as electrophoresis or radioimmunoassay.
How to prepare for the testCertain drugs and medicines can affect test results. Your doctor may tell you to temporarily stop taking a certain medicine before the test. Never stop taking any medicine without first talking to your doctor.
The following drugs can increase TBG levels:
The following drugs can decrease TBG levels:
Certain medical conditions may also affect TBG levels. For example, TBG results may be increased in people with acute intermittent porphyria, HIV, or severe liver disease. They may be reduced in people with kidney failure or liver disease.
How the test will feelWhen the needle is inserted to draw blood, you may feel moderate pain, or only a prick or stinging sensation. Afterward, there may be some throbbing.
Why the test is performedThis test may be done to diagnose problems with your thyroid, including thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism.
Normal ValuesIf electrophoresis is used, normal values may range from 10 mg/100 mL - 24 mg/100 mL.
If radioimmunoassay is used, then a normal range is 1.3 - 2.0 mg/100 mL.
Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results.
The examples above show the common measurements for results for these tests. Some laboratories use different measurements or may test different specimens.
What abnormal results meanIncreased TBG levels may be due to:
Note: TBG levels are normally high in newborns.
Decreased TBG levels may be due to:
Veins and arteries vary in size from one patient to another and from one side of the body to the other. Obtaining a blood sample from some people may be more difficult than from others.
Other risks associated with having blood drawn are slight but may include:

Estrogens, anabolic steroids, phenytoin, and thyroid medications may be discontinued prior to a thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) test.
1.5-3.4 mg/dl or 15-34 mg/L in adults, 2.9-5.4 mg/dl or 29-54 mg/L in children.
The normal value of thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) in the body can vary, but it is typically around 1-5 μg/mL. TRH is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland, which then stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones.
I live in West Reading in one of TBG's last disasters. The rumor is that the company has filed for bankruptcy. The rest of the development is now in limbo. There is a meeting on Tuesday October 28th 2008 at the Borough Hall in West Reading @ 7PM for the residents to discuss with the borough solicitor what our options are from this point on.
TAT B GONE (TAB) Is the best cream available,as they are FDA regulated lad product. when applied to the tattooed part it enters the dermis layer of the skin and help fade away by attacking the ink. More darker the tattoo the more time it takes to fade, however TBG will fetch you a good result.
No, thyroid hormones like T3 and T4 are primarily transported in the blood bound to carrier proteins such as thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), transthyretin (TTR), and albumin. These carrier proteins help to maintain stable levels of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream and protect them from rapid clearance.
A needle is inserted into a vein, usually in the forearm, and a small amount of blood is collected and sent to a laboratory for testing. The patient will usually feel minor discomfort from the "stick" of the needle.
DefinitionThe T3RU test measures the level of proteins that carry thyroid hormone in the blood.Alternative NamesResin T3 uptake; T3 resin uptake; Thyroid hormone-binding ratioHow the test is performedBlood is typically drawn from a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand. The site is cleaned with germ-killing medicine (antiseptic). The health care provider wraps an elastic band around the upper arm to apply pressure to the area and make the vein swell with blood.Next, the health care provider gently inserts a needle into the vein. The blood collects into an airtight vial or tube attached to the needle. The elastic band is removed from your arm.Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed, and the puncture site is covered to stop any bleeding. In infants or young children, a sharp tool called a lancet may be used to puncture the skin and make it bleed. The blood collects into a small glass tube called a pipette, or onto a slide or test strip. A bandage may be placed over the area if there is any bleeding. How to prepare for the testYour health care provider will instruct you, if necessary, to stop taking drugs that may interfere with the test.Drugs that can increase T3RU values include:Anabolic steroidsHeparinPhenytoinSalicylates (high dose)WarfarinThe following can increase thyroxin binding globulin (TBG) levels:Androgens (male hormones)Serious illnessKidney diseaseDrugs that can decrease T3RU values include:Antithyroid medicationsBirth control pillsClofibrateEstrogenThiazidesPregnancy can also decrease T3RU levels. How the test will feelWhen the needle is inserted to draw blood, some people feel moderate pain, while others feel only a prick or stinging sensation. Afterward, there may be some throbbing. Why the test is performedThis test is done to check your thyroid function. Thyroid function is complex and depends on the action of many different hormones, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, and T4.This test helps estimate the availability of thyroxin binding globulin (TBG). This is the protein that carries most of the T3 and T4 in the blood. The higher the level of TBG, the lower the value of T3RU. A higher T3RU value means less TBG is available, possibly as a result of hyperthyroidism.Your doctor may order this test if you have signs of a thyroid disorder, including:HyperthyroidismHypothyroidism - primaryHypothyroidism - secondaryThyrotoxic periodic paralysisNormal ValuesNormal values range from 24 - 37%.Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results. The examples above show the common measurements for results for these tests. Some laboratories use different measurements or may test different specimens. What abnormal results meanGreater than normal levels may indicate:Kidney failureOveractive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)Nephrotic syndromeProtein malnutritionLower than normal levels may indicate:Acute hepatitisPregnancyUnderactive thyroid (hypothyroidism, primary hypothyroidism, or secondary hypothyroidism)Use of estrogenAbnormal results may also be due to an inherited condition of high TBG levels. Usually thyroid function is normal in these people.Other conditions under which the test may be performed:Chronic thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease)Drug-induced hypothyroidismGraves diseaseSubacute thyroiditisThyrotoxic periodic paralysisToxic nodular goiterWhat the risks areVeins and arteries vary in size from one patient to another and from one side of the body to the other. Estrogen, a common ingredient in birth control pills, increase the blood level of Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG). Since TBG binds available thyroid hormone, a patient on birth control pills may have decreased levels of thyroid hormone. This is RARELY a problem, unless a patient has preexisting hypothyroidism. Of course, only your physician can detect this. **Medical Disclaimer: The information contained in this answer is provided for your general information only. I am, in no way, giving medical advice.
