While no cure exists for eczema, eczema cream can reduce the appearance, symptoms, and duration of an eczema outbreak. Most patients see a reduction in both reddening and itch within a few minutes of application.

Eczema creams help relieve itching associated with atopic dermatitis. Eczema is a chronic inflammation of the skin. Hay fever and Asthma may cause eczema or make it worse. Although eczema can be found anywhere on the body, it is more common on the arms and behind the knees. Doctors don't know what causes this skin condition, but it could be related to sensitive skin and immune system function.

Eczema Symptoms

Eczema causes brownish-gray or reddish patches of skin. The affected area is usually itchy, which can worsen at night. When scratched, a fluid may leak out and form a crust over the area. Some sufferers will have scaly or cracked skin. It is commonly found on the hands, feed, behind the knee, inside of the elbow, face, upper chest or neck.

It usually affects children under the age of 5, and it can last until adulthood. Some eczema sufferers will only experience occasional flares, but others have these scaly patches almost constantly. Scratching the area can cause bacteria to enter under the skin and cause a secondary infection.

Eczema Treatment

If you suffer from eczema, it is best to avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals on your skin. Avoid creams, lotions and soaps with artificial color or scent. Also avoid hot water or soaking a bathtub for long periods of time.

Eczema creams can help reduce itching and inflammation and prevent flareups. Creams are available in both prescription and over-the-counter strength. Corticosteroid creams are available by prescription from a doctor. They help reduce scaling and itching. Low-strength corticosteroid creams are available over-the-counter, but you should talk to your doctor before using them. Long-term use of these creams can cause your skin to thin or discolor.

Since corticosteroids can't be used long term, look for a cream to help prevent symptoms for daily use. Look for vitamin E, an important antioxidant to help heal and hydrate the skin. Shea butter helps relive dry skin and trap moisture into the skin. Calendula helps relieve red, inflamed skin and reduce eczema symptoms.
