Why lying can be useful?

Although I believe that lowing is usually wrong, lying can be used to get what you want or gain support from people. Losing is also used by people such as police negotiators to convince people to release hostages or not commit suicide. Some lies are needed to save lives or prevent panick while others are deviant and try to hide things that people should know about.
