Good question.
Do you think that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day? This recommendation is often quoted and comes from the 1945 edition of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. But the recommendation includes water from the food that you eat! That's right. We get water from all of the food we eat, no matter how dry it may seem. In fact, we may get 4-5 glasses of water directly from our food. The food is dissolved in our stomachs, and then the fluid is absorbed by our colon. If you're not getting enough water, your stool will be hard, and you may be constipated.
So, you should be getting the equivalent of 3-4 glasses of water a day, in addition to the water that you get from food. Finally, some studies have demonstrated that it does not matter how you get this water - it can be in the form of other drinks (ie. tea, juice, coffee, Diet Soda, etc.).
Now, should you take extra water when you are sick? Well, this depends on your symptoms. If you are vomiting, or have loose stools, you are probably losing a lot of fluid that needs to be replaced. If you have a fever, and are sweating, you may require more fluids but if you just have a cough and sniffles, nobody has shown that extra fluid will help you get better faster.
