Medically, the term "girth" refers to the measurement around the waist. "Girth" usually describes someone who has gained a lot of belly fat.

A person with a large girth faces a higher risk of many medical conditions. When a person gains weight, extra calories are deposited as fat. Fat can begin to surround each organ--heart, liver, kidneys, etc.

Research has shown large girth often means the person will develop several major conditions, like:

Heart disease, heart attack, or stroke

Diabetes, with complications to kidneys, heart, blood vessels

higher risk of gallbladder stones, with risk for surgery to remove them

higher risk of joint pain and injury, especially the knees and hips

For females:

Abnormalities to the menstrual cycle

polycystic ovaries

increased risk of infertility
