Honestly,a lot of people enjoy material things over things that truly matter, not just teens. A middle young teen to an aging senior citizen could love material things. If you are asking why it is more common in teens then that is because they are not yet adults and have not yet fully matured. Most of them will learn valuable lessons later on though like i said some will always love material things.
