Why do people say LOL or LMAO or ROFL when there's no reason to say it?

For a number of reasons. I think the main one is because it's faster and easier to type. They may also do it if they want to make the person they are texting or IM-ing feel better about themselves and maybe also to start off a sentence. Also to make things less serious. Girls may say LOL when they talk to a Boyfriend meaning Lots Of Love.
Ex 1: LMAO I just saw my cat sniff cat-nip for two hours.
Ex 2: LOL I just got a detention.
Ex 3: Do you love me? LotsOfLove.
