Purplish color, or cyanosis, which is usually a bluish color indicates a lack of oxygen and is associated with circulatory problems. This may occur as part of edema, or swelling that can occur from water weight gain which is common for women during certain times of their menstrual cycle. If it is not severe and/or causing you discomfort or alarm and lasts more than a few days you should have a physician check and see if there is some other cause that needs medical attention.
