Study: Thermal screening of facial skin arterial hot spots using non-contact infrared radiometry Location: Faculty of Health, Sport and Science, University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, UK. Date: March, 2008. Purpose of Study: The aim of this study was to determine the link between the temperature at specific facial skin sites and clinical body temperature using non-contact (IR) infrared thermometry. Sample Test Group: A sample of 169 asymptomatic male and female adults (age range 18-54 years) was screened with IR thermometers. to measure skin surface temperature. Peak IR skin temperature was measured over the course of each posterior auricular artery (PAA) and each superficial temporal artery (STA). The peak skin temperature of the forehead's MR (metopic region) was also recorded. There were no asymmetric temperature differences between the left and right sides of females; however, males had warmer skin over the MR. Disclaimer: The University stated that additional studies would have to be conducted in order to conclusively validate the results of the study. Male versus Female Forehead in general: This is one of the most important gender markers. The ridge of bone that runs right across the forehead just above the eyes is usually far more pronounced in males. In fact many genetic women have almost no discernable brow-bossing at all; their foreheads tend to be gently rounded overall with a fairly flat front. In addition, men's foreheads are often backwards-sloping whilst women's tend to be more vertical.
The mark if put on men's forehead is called Tilak and women's forehead is called Bindi.
