As a runner I was shocked to find out that you burn more calories running as opposed to swimming. I know that swimming is one of the the best exercises due to that fact that practically every muscle in the body is working while swimming. Therefore, I surmised (incorrectly) that you would burn more calories swimming than running. However, I found when I plugged my information into one of the numerous calorie calculators on the web, that you burn around 100 more callories an hour when running. Unfortunately, of the approximately 10 calculators that I used in my research none were consistent with each other. This may be confusing, but I would have to say my research is as of yet inconclusive, because of the many inconsistencies in data and brevity of the research.
To answer your question more specifically, Triathalons are the sport that burns the most. I would like to see data on some other, non-traditional sport, like Motocross racing. I have heard that this sport is tremendously demanding on the body and requires an high degree of overall fitness.
Triathlon: 10000 kcal
Tour de France per stage: 10000 kcal
Marathon: 3000 kcal
Swimming has been proven to be the Only sport in which your whole body muscles are involved ending up in burning alot of calories.
