A trainer will benefit you in that they will be able to access your current strength level and safely set you up with a program to acheive your goals. Check with your local health club to find out rates and availablility of personal trainers in your area.
Strength training shoes are effective in so much as you walk which is exercise in itself. They however, do not offer any additional benefit. The claims that they provide better balance have not been proven to any noticiable degree.

Sweating and using the bathroom will decrease your body weight. The benefit of strength training is that more of the weight on your body will be lean, which means that it will contribute more to your strength and other aspects of fitness.
