What is the purpose of a bone biopsy?

There are several different types of biopsies.A needle (percutaneous) biopsy removes tissue using a hollow tube called a syringe. A needle is passed through the syringe into the area being examined. The surgeon uses the needle to remove the tissue sample. Needle biopsies are often done using x-rays (usually CT scan), which guide the surgeon to the appropriate area. An open biopsy is a surgery that uses general anesthesia. This means you are asleep and pain-free during the procedure. The procedure is done in a hospital operating room. A surgeon makes a cut into the affected area, and the tissue is removed. Closed biopsy uses a much smaller surgical cut than open biopsy. A small cut is made so that a camera-like instrument can be inserted. This instrument helps guide the surgeon to the appropriate place to take the sample. A biopsy are most often done to examine tissue for disease. A biopsy may also be done to match organ tissue before a transplant. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003416.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biopsy

Is it safe to take Valium before a needle biopsy?

Taking Valium (diazepam) before a needle biopsy can help ease anxiety for some patients, but it should only be done under the guidance of a healthcare provider. It's important to discuss any medications with your doctor beforehand, as they will consider your medical history and the specifics of the procedure. Additionally, the effects of Valium on sedation and potential interactions with other medications or anesthesia should be carefully managed. Always follow your healthcare provider's advice regarding medication use before medical procedures.

Not always but it is considered one of the most aggresive. If a biopsy is done on it the cancer can spread by following the tract of the needle used to biopsy it. Biopsies used to be done on ovarian but they learned the hard way that you must surgicaly remove them instead.

How do they do a needle biopsy?

A needle biopsy is performed by inserting a thin, hollow needle through the skin to obtain a sample of tissue from a specific area, such as a tumor or suspicious lesion. The procedure may be guided by imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT, or MRI to ensure accurate placement. After local anesthesia is administered, the needle is inserted and the sample is extracted, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The procedure is typically quick, minimally invasive, and can be done on an outpatient basis.

What prostate cancer tests are currently available and what is their accuracy?

Digital Rectal exam; blood test for PSA level; transrectal biopsy. Only the biopsy can tell for sure if cancer is present. And it is not 100% accurate as the biopsy needle may miss the cancer on the first sampling. The test may need to be done again a few months down the road.
