The mind is what falls asleep. It cuts down on its processes, essentially sending the body into hibernation mode. The amount of adrenaline in the body decreases and somatotrophon, which helps to heal damaged tissues, increases. While people sleep, the body is still working to store memories and such. People still breathe and their hearts pump, proving it's not the body (or eyes) that "sleep." Sleeping just allows the body to become more efficient, because it has less stimuli distracting it, and the brain is free to command healing and other metabolic functions while one is unconscious.
