You should start making yearly pap exams with a gynecologist once you start having your period or intercourse. Even if you don't have intercourse until you're married, you should still get a pap smear done. Pap smears mainly checks for Cervical cancer. Cervical cancer has nothing to do with intercourse. You have the option of testing for STD's or HIV, but not a requirement. Make sure that you are not on your period around the time of your appointment. And if you feel that you would prefer a female doctor over a male doctor then let the appointment scheduler/nurse know.
Any woman who is sexually active should be seen by a Gynecologist once a year.
