You should start making yearly pap exams with a gynecologist once you start having your period or intercourse. Even if you don't have intercourse until you're married, you should still get a pap smear done. Pap smears mainly checks for Cervical cancer. Cervical cancer has nothing to do with intercourse. You have the option of testing for STD's or HIV, but not a requirement. Make sure that you are not on your period around the time of your appointment. And if you feel that you would prefer a female doctor over a male doctor then let the appointment scheduler/nurse know.
Any woman who is sexually active should be seen by a Gynecologist once a year. For the last 50 years or so it was recommended a PAP test be done every year as a way for you and your doctor to watch for early changes that indicate cervical cancer. Insurance companies are currently calling for the test to be done every 2 years, while most GYN doctors are still recommending every year.
That issue should be discussed with your doctor at your next annual exam. Women who are not sexually active should see their doctor starting between age 18 and 21. At that time discuss when you should be seen again.
If a young woman who is having issues with her period, whether she is sexually active or not is not too young to be seen.
OR ANOTHER OPINION:
There isn't really a way to tell. Unless something is wrong down there, or you just feel that you need to go just to reassure yourself.
There is no right age to go to the gynecologist. You should go as soon as you become sexually active or have problems.
You should take your daughter to the gynecologist between the ages of thirteen and fifteen. :)
Either 16 or whenever you first become sexually active. You can see the gynecologist before 16 if you have problems or want to go on Birth Control.
