A Transient Ischemic Attack, or TIA is essentially a mini-stroke without the damage. It occurs when blood temporarily clogs an artery and the brain doesn't get the blood it needs.

If you've had a TIA, make sure to contact your doctor. Some of the things you should do after a TIA include:

Take medications prescribed by your doctor exactly as prescribed.

-Potentially change your diet

-Stay away from fatty foods and trans-fat, as much as possible

-Rest, especially if you don't feel stable

-Ask your Doctor about work-out options that will be safe for your body

-Make sure you're hydrated

Things you shouldn't do:

-Don't eat too many fatty foods or trans-fats

-Don't exercise vigorously

-Don't overdo any activity- rest often

-Don't have an excess of alcohol

-Don't abuse illegal/legal drugs

-Be careful about blood medication- don't take anything your Doctor hasn't prescribed

-Be careful about NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) (painkillers)

Many TIA's may lead to an actual stroke. The likelihood of having a stroke increases. Contact your Doctor for more information. Self diagnosis commonly leads to error, so be careful.

You can contact the National Stroke Association for further information. National Stroke Association
