Depends. If he was hurt, but won, then just hold him and comfort him. Thank him for protecting you.

But if he lost, he might reject your hug. He'll be feeling embarassed for having lost. If you can do so plausibly, portray the attacker as having hit him from behind, or used some other sneaky method.

If not, just wait it out, and hug him when he lets you. He'll probably want to rant about some unfair aspect of it, just nod yes.
