sore throat is an infection that can be either viral or bacterial. It is most commonly caused by a contagious viral infection (such as the flu, cold or mononucleosis), although more serious throat infections can be caused by a bacterial infection (such as strep, mycoplasma or hemophilus) . Bacterial sore throats respond well to antibiotics while viral ones do not. For viral based infections, there are many natural remedies that you can take to cure a sore throat. Some of these folk remedies work within an hour or two, others take effect overnight.
If you do not see some improvement overnight please visit your doctor, especially if you suspect strep throat.
#1 REMEDY: Cayenne Powder Cures Sore or Strep
We think the best remedy on this page for a sore throat (whether viral, bacterial or strep) is cayenne pepper. You may still need to continue the remedy for 2 - 3 days to see final results, so be patient! This remedy works when antibiotics do not.
Penny's Cayenne Pepper Remedy: Penny from Fresno, CA writes, "If it is too late, as in strep, it takes gargling with cayenne in water every fifteen minutes until it goes, and be patient, because it GOES. I haven't had a sore throat take hold in 15 years or more, though many have tried to start up, which also is a way for many illnesses to sprout. I generally will gargle cayenne in water at whatever strength I like and do it as much as I can until I tire of it, and then repeat every fifteen minutes, each time swallowing a tiny bit real slowly (not necessary). It only stings the tongue a little when spitting out, otherwise, no discomfort, you can get used to even the swallowing part when you see how well it works. I use the cheap Mex. stuff, but also keep on hand in refir the pesticide free stuff from health store. Cayenne is a miracle cure for ulcers and so many other conditions, plus aids assimilation of nutrients and vitamins. I will keep cayenne in water in the bathroom in case I get up in the night, so I can gargle once in the night if I am very sick, but if it is in water, it will go bad quickly and needs to be put back in refridge in morning. Afterwards suck on a clove (see below). I have never seen a sore throat that won't succumb to it."

CAYENNE PEPPER AND GROUND GINGER
12/28/2006: Janeene from Saginaw, MI writes, "I have used this remedy for YEARS and can tell you, IT WORKS!! The only thing that I do different is, I add an equal amount of ground ginger along with the cayenne pepper into a cup of HOT water and allow it to steep with a lid on the cup for 5 minutes. Then allow it to cool to a comfortable tempurature (or add a little cold water) and gargle. This may seem time consuming when you are in a lot of pain but it is worth the wait! Allowing it to steep like that makes sure the spices are at their best. The cayenne brings the blood to the throat helping circulation for those well needed "healing soldiers" and the ginger calms the throat and helps reduce the swelling. I sometimes drink this as a tea on those cold winter nights to help me stay warm! For you hunters out there...sprinkle cayenne in your socks to keep your feet warm out in the field. The moisture from your feet activates the heat of the pepper keeping those toes TOASTY!!! CAYENNE PEPPER IS THE BEST!"
STREP THROAT & CAYENNE PEPPER
7/23/2006: Our Bangkok contributor Ted responds to our Cayenne Strep Throat cure. He writes us, "Strep throat is best handled by killing the infection in the bacteria by increasing the alkalinity, in particular I found a strong solution of potassium carbonate works best as a mouth wash of course, but sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with frequent intervals will do. Sometimes a strep throat is acid resistant, however it is rarely alkaline resistant, being its main weaknesses. Cayenne pepper will increase the blood flow of the capillaries bringing on increased immune systems to the site whenever a strep throat does occur and will help by bring on the body's own immune process at work. However, 2 days is a pretty long time to cure a strep throat, normally a strep throat, if done right should be gone within hours, especially the pain. Ted"
Baked Lemon & Olive Oil
Tara McDonald, from Perth, ON, Canada sent us this old Canadian Folk Remedy to cure sore throats. She writes, "This recipe was given to my grandparents by a spunky 90+ year old (or should I say young) Opera singer one day while he was digging in his garden. He valued his voice greatly and refused to take any "modern medications" that might numb his throat instead of heal it."
Recipe: 1 Lemon, Good Cold Pressed Olive Oil, Honey (optional). Go around the lemon - poking it with a fork and then put it in the oven (350') until juice bubbles out the holes. Cool. Squeeze the lemon and put the juice in a jar. Add an equal amount of olive oil. Add some honey if you like. SHAKE! Take a small spoonful now and again - like a lozenge.
