The social impact may be immeasurable, it was a devastating loss of life and also a loss of confidence in our American know-how. It came at a time where we really needed a boost in our outlook as a culture, and after it happened changes were made to the NASA program including not allowing any more civilians to fly on missions. The teacher that lost her life was scheduled to teach elementary school lessons from space as a boost to our confidence in our education system and our hopes for the future. Those visions may have suffered irrepairable losses, mostly in social ideals.
