I think that at first you 2 should talk.. he must explain why he did it ( I don't think thing like it may have an explanation ) . then ask him not to do it anymore.. of course if you love and need him. if sth like it happened to me I'd go to police, would tell them everything and they'd take care of it. cause I think that if man hits woman once he may do it other times and your life just gets worse, like hell.
