In my experience, the best over the counter medicine for sore throat pain is ibuprofen (advil, motrin) or acetaminophen (tylenol) taken as directed on the bottle. Sore throat pain is like any other pain you may experience, and will respond to pain medication. In addition, gargling with warm salt water several times a day (3-4) provides relief and will help you heal faster. If your sore throat is due to Allergies or post nasal drip, you might also try benadryl (diphenhydramine) to help dry that up. Sore throat drops/candies and sprays are numbing agents. They tend to numb the tongue rather than the back of the throat. If you are set on one of these products, the spray will probably work better if you can get the spray back to the throat.

ANSWER: Cherry Flavored Cloroseptic Spray. The non-cherry/original flavored version is not that tasty, but they both work GREAT -- nothing available over-the-counter even comes close. You rinse your mouth and/or gargle with it and the pain's gone before you even spit it out. You can use it as needed/as often as you like *if* you don't swallow it. Be warned though -- the cherry version tastes so good it's hard not to swallow it. And, if your throat hurts way in the back, you just swallow extremely small sips and you'll usually get to sleep before you need another dose. Oh, it's expensive, but it works so fast and with so little of it, it'll last months to years in your medicine cabinet. Oh, and if you have young kids, hide it well OR get the non-cherry one --they PROBABLY won't drink it if they get their hands on it.

P.S. If you weren't referring to a sore throat, but actually wanting to knock out the bacteria that's causing your infection in less time than it would normally take to run its course, then there's nothing you can get without a doctor's prescription.

Good luck!

Usually hot herbal tea with lemon, and resting your voice is the best remedy. Unfortunately there is no quick fix in this situation. Try tea like Calm tea from Starbucks- I am suffering from it myself. Try to talk as little as possible. Ricola, and halls and Ludens help as well.

There are many medicine you can take depending on how bad the infection is. One of the effective sore throat medicine is Strepsils. It has many flavours. It also has different types. For instance one is especially for both blocked nose and a sore throat. However, these issues should always have input from a qualified medical practitioner

There are many OTC medicines which are good for sore throats. However you must select one which is reputed and best in terms of availability where ever you go. Non availability can cause people to juggle on how to soothe sore throat when in desperate situation. Best is to always keep it in your first aid kit so that you don't miss it during.
